patrol agent was killed and another wounded in a shooting near the u.s.-mexico border in arizona. the department says the agents were involved in a shooting on duty near the town of naco this morning. the wounded agent is being airlift to the hospital. as soon as we get more information we'll pass it along. >> reporter: in vallejo, a house fire destroyed half a home and injured a firefighter. three-alarm fire. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran was the first reporter on the scene and spoke with the homeowner about some daring rescue attempts. she joins us now with the latest. >> reporter: i spoke with the two people in the house. it was a father and son. and thank goodness the smoke alarms went off. they had a second security system that called them and asked them if they were okay so they were well prepared for this fire. you want to look at this damage now. the call came in around 3:15 this morning as a brush fire and half the house was in flames when firefighters got

here on scene. they say the flames were up to 30 feet high. vallejo fire department had to call in extra support from american canyon, fairfield and cordelia. because of that, they were able to tackle it quickly and able to fight it offensively meaning go inside the house and because of that, they were able to salvage some of the valuables inside. now, as it stands, firefighters were in there. you can see them they're all on the second floor. what they are doing now is looking for hotspots to make sure it is completely out. half of the houses damaged, again the two people, the father and son that were inside, are okay. one firefighter did suffer some exhaustion but was treated and released. the crews are waiting for an investigator to come on scene. they say they have no reason to believe that it is arson. i spoke to the father and son and they said the one thing that the son had to save was his college degree. he showed it to me. he got it from california state, sacramento. he said that was the one thing i needed to pull out and he

showed it to me. it's intact. so that was a good thing. again, another thing that firefighters reinforced, the smoke alarms woke them up. the separate security system, that's something valuable, especially in cases like these so there is good news continuing. day. live in vallejo, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> good reminder to check the batteries. well, there is going to be post-season baseball on both sides of the bay, pretty exciting. >> here in the city and oakland too. the as beat the rangers last night. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington at the oakland coliseum where the as got some work to do, could even be better if they could win the next two games. >> reporter: if they win the next two games they could win the division something that people never saw coming at the beginning of the season, the as always seen as the underdog but they are on a winning streak and the excitement is not over for fans. there is a game tonight at 7:00 against the rangers but it was a big game last night when they beat the rangers 4-3 that

clinched that spot in the play- offs. here is the 9th inning strikeout that sealed the deal. >> he got him! he struck him out! [ applause and cheers ] >> reporter: this was the as' fourth straight win and six of seven. more than 21,000 fans packed the stands last night to see the six-year dry spell end finally. in the clubhouse corks were flying and champagne flowing. >> whoo! >> reporter: looks like fun, doesn't it? and this is a big deal because nobody expected this from the as especially this year. the team is young, there's 15 rookies on the roster. and this is really supposed to be a year about rebuilding. many of those rookies actually played key roles last night like pitcher jared parker who held the rangers to three runs and six hits. the as took the lead in the 1st inning. they were tied by the fourth and then in the bottom of the 5th, coco crisp had a big hit a go-ahead double giving the as

the lead. the rangers couldn't catch them. the as are headed to the post- season for the first time since 2006. taking one of the american league west wild card play-off spots. >> when you look at the team when i was in spring training nobody gave it a chance at least the people from the outside didn't give it a chance. what did you think? >> it was a mistake. we kept a few articles that said we are going to lose 100 games. none of us believed that. billy didn't believe it at all. >> reporter: to take the division crown, the as need to sweep the rangers. next game tonight at 7:05. very exciting here in oakland especially for those fans, who have been waiting a long time and frank, i heard you mention earlier that, yeah, only about 22,000 people came out but maybe it will be more full, more fans coming out as the excitement continues. in oakland, elissa harrington, cbs 5. >> they deserve the support after what they have done. they have the second lowest payroll in baseball. when you think of the yankees and red sox and all those big teams and they have come out of

probably some triple digits especially in the east bay valleys. 100 degrees in livermore. about 86 degrees in san francisco. and about 97 in santa rosa. enjoy it. we have some major changes coming our way. we'll talk more about that in a moment. first let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> we are going towards the bay bridge where if you want to beat the rush you can head out right about now because there's no metering lights and this is our pattern that we always see forming outer cash lanes starting to back up to the middle of the parking lot or beyond. this is a great reason to take fastrak. the middle lanes looking good heading into san francisco and we'll let you know as soon as they turn the metering lights on. in the meantime, very stop and go out of the altamont pass all the way towards the dublin interchange. pretty busy through livermore. we're also getting word of a new problem going against the commute eastbound 24 into caldecott tunnel. there's a stall blocking one right lane. so maybe a little slow heading out towards orinda but the marin county drive looking good through sausalito and fog-free. we can see traffic.

that's a check of your "timesaver traffic." back to you guys. >> thank you. developing story in oakland overnight two deadly shootings within 90 minutes on the same stretch of street. both happened last night on macarthur boulevard. the first happened on the 9000 block just before 9:00. a man was shot several times, died at the scene. the other was about an hour and a half later on the 2000 block, once again on macarthur. that man died at the scene. so far there are no suspects in either case. this morning, grieving teachers in albany will hold a vigil to remember their colleague. james izumizaki was a 6th grade teacher at albany middle school. yesterday, he was found dead in his car in san lorenz so. he was recently charged with lewd acts with a former student. the alameda county sheriff's office is investigating the death as a suicide. the superintendent will hold a press conference this morning. today a san francisco man accused of kidnapping a girl in san mateo will be in court to

enter a plea. badly mrozek is accused of grow -- bradley mrozek is accuse of groping a 9-year-old girl on parkside elementary school and taking her off campus. police say she got away by kicking of suspect and running back to the school. in other headlines, more testimony in the trial of murder suspect giselle esteban. she is accused of killing nursing student michelle le in hayward last year. in opening statements yesterday, prosecutors blamed a jealous rage for prompting esteban to kill her former friend. the defense says it was not premeditated, but done in the heat of passion. the body of one of two missing fishermen has washed ashore on the san mateo county coast. the man was aboard an 18-foot fishing boat when it capsized early sunday off pidgeon point. a second man is still missing. neither were wearing life jackets. two other men on board were wearing life jackets and made it safely to shore. all right. it is 6:09. it will be later this morning before amtrak trains can run between hanford and bakersfield

in the san joaquin valley. tracks closed for repairs after two different railroad crashes involving big rigs. ironically, a big rig slammed into a freight train in hanford. the truck driver had minor injuries there. earlier yesterday, there was another crash about 15 miles away. about 40 passengers on that amtrak train were hurt none seriously. it was going from oakland to bakersfield. the driver didn't cross at the stopping gate and slammed into the train, according to police. >> how did you not see that the train was crossing, the arms were down, i don't know if there's any indication of any use of alcohol or drugs. >> the truck driver was trapped in his rig for about an hour after that crash. no word on why he didn't stop for the train. american airlines has engineers in new york checking the seats on 8 boeing 757 jets. the inspections were ordered after two incidents where rowings of seats came loose

section, as well. san mateo bridge, westbound 92, usually after 8:00 hour that's when it really starts to bottleneck or starts to get heavier out of hayward towards foster city. so westbound 92, still 14 minutes between hayward and the peninsula. eastbound looking good in the east bay. no issues there. check out highway 4. it is really slow this morning. unfortunately, this is just your usual ride through antioch. one of our live drive time sensors showing speeds around 10 miles per hour. and then it gets better like usual heading towards concord. elsewhere, word from chp they cleared a stall on eastbound 24 blocking one lane of the right bore there heading towards orinda. elsewhere, if you are traveling along the peninsula, got the early-morning flight to catch by sfo, it is a free and clear ride out of san francisco. no delay at all. looks great. that's actually closer towards lagoon, so everything is cruising all the way down along the peninsula into palo alto. now, if you are heading into san francisco, once again, we

have these street closures around howard. howard is shut down for about a block between 3rd and 4th. but it's been causing just a mess right there by moscone center oracle open world. that's what's going on. once again, everything looks good for mass transit. we haven't had any issues on mass transit, so all trains heading into downtown are right on schedule. that's a check of your "timesaver traffic." and like we say, we have traffic and weather together every 10 minutes. so here's my buddy next to me, lawrence. >> oh, sure, everybody wants to be my friend when it's sunny outside! lots of hot temperatures around the bay area, today again very similar. mostly clear skies, all the way to the coastline. we're looking good and some very mild temperatures to start out the day. in fact, by the afternoon, with mild temperatures, it is going to get hot. probably some triple digits showing up in some of the valleys and then we'll start to see some gradual cooling but for know that ridge of high pressure is in place so one more hot day for today. and then we'll begin to see some cooldown as this area of

low pressure approaches the coastline. that will usher in more low clouds and fog and drop the temperatures. sfo looking good. nice clear start to the day. afternoon sunshine too and some warm temperatures around the country a few clouds into houston, about 81 degrees. sunny and bright in denver at 86. could see a few showers into chicago at 68 and expect rain this afternoon in new york at 73. around the bay, we'll see sunny and hot conditions. 93 degrees in san jose. 97 in morgan hill. about 75 degrees in half moon bay. and 78 in pacifica. lots of sunshine, hot temperatures inland, 102 one of the hotspots in brentwood. 102 pleasanton. 96 in the napa valley. inside the bay as high as 89 in oakland. 87 in berkeley. 86 degrees in san francisco and 97 and hot in santa rosa. the next couple of days those temperatures will begin to cool down a bit. more low clouds and fog on the way, probably moving in along the san mateo coastline by tomorrow afternoon and then that fog will continue on the increase. more clouds on the way over the

spring. he also told me how this whole morning started. they have smoke detectors in the house. they also had a second security system that called them to alert them that there was basically -- their alarms were going off to make sure they were okay. the father in the household got awoken by the smoke alarm, called the son and they were able to get out safely. the call came in for firefighters around 3:15 this morning as a brush fire. when crews got here on scene, half of the house was in flames. they say the flames were shooting up to 30 feet high. vallejo fire department has a call in the support of american canyon fairfield and cordelia and because of that, they were able to attack it aggressively and quickly and offensively. they were able to go inside and make sure that they salvaged as much as of the house as they could. we smoke to the battalion chief on scene who said the biggest challenge was the size of the house. >> this is a big old house.

a lot of rooms off this. crews went through a lot of extensive work getting it under control. other than that i got an investigator come in. we'll investigate it and see where it goes from there. >> reporter: now what you're looking at is that college diploma that -- will is the name of the victim who told me he had to go in there and save it. he just moved back here after graduating with college, staying with his dad looking for work. when he got up he grabbed it to be sure it was safe. as for fire crews, neighboring homes, probably a lot of foliage, trees and brush in the area. they are concerned about the fire spreading. again, the two people inside are okay. one firefighter was treated for exhaustion and has been released. now we're waiting for an investigator to figure out how this happened. the crews at this point don't believe it is arson. live in vallejo, cate caugiran cbs 5. >> glad everybody is okay. thank you. the oakland as are going to the play-offs for the first

and apple. apple won a $1 billion jury judgment against samsung recently regarding patent infringement on the iphone and ipad and now samsung is appealing that and now adding another apple device to its own patent case against apple this time the iphone 5. at the same time, the judge presiding over the case in san jose in federal court decided to lift the sales ban on the galaxy tab 10.1 that was the one samsung device that the jury said did not infringe on apple's patents. a lot of legal maneuvering going on between them. speaking of tablets, hewlett- packard, which got out of the business a year ago, is getting back in with a new tablet that's aimed at the enterprise market based off of the palm web os software system that it bought a couple of years ago. automakers sales in september, chrysler sales up 12%, its best september in five years. ford reporting that its sales

were down a tenth of a percent on lower truck sales. stocks, mild gain so far today dow up 14, nasdaq up 12, s&p up 4. back to you. >> thank you, kcbs moneywatch reporter jason brooks. all right. 6:50. let's check on the weather. you went to the beach yesterday. >> can we talk weather now? yes. it was fantastic at the beach! we don't have that many days like this left in the season, so yeah, get out there and enjoy it. it looks like almost a carbon copy today. clear skies around the bay area now all the way to the beaches and it's going to stay that way all day long. it's going to be hot in spots but it won't be long and these temperatures will cool down. today the numbers will be approaching triple digits once again and then the cooling begins as early as tomorrow. that's when these temperatures really start to drop off. but today, high pressure remains in place so another one on the hot side. then this low is going to start to slide in toward the bay area. we'll see an increase in low clouds and fog along the san

mateo county coastline as early as tomorrow afternoon cooling down the temperatures. it will be 100 in sacramento today. 100 in fresno. 95 in yosemite. 82 in monterey bay. around the bay here, 93 in san jose, 97 in morgan hill, 75 degrees in half moon bay. triple digits showing up in some of the valleys, so not record-breaking but still very hot about 89 degrees in oakland, 86 degrees in san francisco, and 97 degrees and hot in santa rosa. the next couple of days, the temperatures start to drop off. more clouds on the way. partly cloudy this next weekend, those temperatures likely headed below average as we look toward next sunday and monday. oward next sunday and it's traffic time. for that we head to elizabeth. >> there is plenty of traffic across the bay bridge. metering lights have been on for more than 20 minutes and they are cycling through the metering lights slowly. no incident at the bridge but, yeah, it's a big backup right now already jamming up towards the 880 overcrossing. and growing about 15 minutes or so just to get on the bridge. and hey, if you are commuting

in the city, we are expecting delays along the embarcadero, the practice rounds of america's cup begins today. so between bay and north point, they may be blocking various lanes especially in the morning hours. also, golden gate transit bus stops some of them may have to be altered along the embarcadero. again, america's cup, the remainer of this week. this is an injury crash we are following heading into san francisco northbound 280 approaching alemany boulevard, accident with injuries involving a motorcycle rider. they may have fire crews and emergency crews on scene blocking lanes. they may be shutting down the northbound 280 alemany off-ramp to northbound 280. so in the meantime, 101 might be a better option. that's a check of your "timesaver traffic" traffic and weather together every 10 minutes. the blue angels will be in the bay area tonight. look to the sky this weekend. the blue angels are scheduled to perform for fleet week over the weekend saturday and sunday. they are due to arrive at the

recently graduated from cal state sacramento. again, that was one thing he had to take but let me bring you up to speed on what happened in this fire. it started around 3:15 originally came in as a brush fire. flames were reaching about 30 feet high. vallejo fire department called in the support of american canyon. they were able to attack it aggressively from the inside. they were able to limit it to one home. half the house is damaged, people inside are okay, one firefighter was treated for exhaustion. they are waiting for an investigatory figure out how it happened. but at this point, they have no reason to believe that it was arson. live in vallejo, cate caugiran cbs 5. >> thank you. if you liked yesterday, you will love today. >> triple digits in the valleys, even 70s at the coastline. enjoy it because we are cooling down big time as we head into
